The 2019 DSCC is pleased to announce a Best Student Paper Award

The 2019 DSCC will continue the tradition of earlier ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Conferences in providing students and young professionals with activities and events tailored to their careers and needs. We are pleased to announce the following activities and events. Please check the DSCC website periodically for new announcements of activities/events.

Best Student Paper Competition

The 2019 DSCC is pleased to announce a Best Student Paper Award. Students who are first authors can be nominated by their advisors, and finalists (determined by a panel of anonymous judges) will be contacted prior to the conference. Finalists will present their papers twice at the 2019 DSCC: (1) at a regular session and (2) at a dedicated Best Student Paper competition session. The presentation at the Best Student Paper competition session will be 12 minutes long with 2 minutes reserved for Q&A. The finalists and winner will receive special recognition at the 2019 DSCC awards ceremony prior to the banquet. Moreover, funds will be made available to defray a larger portion of these students' conference-related registration, travel, hotel, and meal expenses than possible through the regular student travel grants.

A participant in the competition must

  • be a student at the time the paper (the competition entry) was submitted to 2019 DSCC
  • serve as the first author on the competition entry
  • present the paper at DSCC her/himself
  • provide a nomination letter from his/her advisor certifying the above.

To compete for the Best Student Paper Award, the paper must be nominated by the student’s advisor. The nomination letter should be on the official letterhead in the format of the sample letter and should be sent to Drs. Nicole Abaid and Matteo Aureli, Student and Young Members Chairs, 2019 ASME DSCC at The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2019.

Student Travel Grants

Small grants will be available to help defray the cost of conference-related registration, travel, hotel, and meal expenses by student attendees. The intent of these grants is not to cover all conference-related student expenses, but rather to partially assist students with these costs.

Travel grants will be available for conference attendees who:

  • present their papers at DSCC themselves
  • were students at the time they submitted these papers to DSCC
  • do not receive reimbursement for the requested travel expenses from other sources; and (iv) provide letters from their advisors certifying the above.

To apply for a student travel grant, the academic advisor of the student should send a letter on the official letterhead in the format of the sample letter to Drs. Nicole Abaid and Matteo Aureli, Student and Young Members Chairs, 2019 ASME DSCC at by July 15, 2019. You will receive an email confirming your travel grant by August 15, 2019. When you attend DSCC, please ask at the registration desk for the paperwork needed for actual receipt of the travel grant. This paperwork will request some information necessary for you to receive reimbursement (e.g., your address, your Social Security Number for domestic students, your bank account information for students traveling to DSCC from abroad). To protect your privacy, we are collecting this information in person at DSCC, and the information will only be accessible to ASME staff, who will issue your travel grant.

Student Career Advising Session

The DSCC 2019 will host an event for students to receive advice about careers in academia and industry. Professionals from a range of universities and industries will be available during a lunch session for one-on-one meetings with students. Students who are interested should complete the DSCC 2019 Student Career Advising Session form to reserve meetings during this event, and are encouraged to bring their CVs/resumes if they would like them reviewed.
