Dr. J. Stephen Herring is Chief Nuclear Designer for REPLOY Power, Inc. In 2014 he retired from the Idaho National Laboratory, where he was the chairman of the Laboratory Fellows and Deputy Director for Nuclear Systems Analysis and Design. He is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and in 2004 received its Mishima Award for contributions to the development of thorium-uranium fuels. In 2011-12 he served a one-year assignment as technical advisor to the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy in Washington, DC.

Immediately prior to that assignment, he was responsible for the development of solid oxide cells for the efficient electrolytic production of hydrogen and synthetic transportation fuels using nuclear energy.

Steve holds BS degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering from Iowa State University (1971), and a PhD in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1979). He was a Rotary Foundation Fellow at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zürich, 1974-75, and a Visiting Scientist at the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe in 1987.
