NSF/ASME Student Design Essay Competition: Challenges in the Design of Complex Systems
NSF and ASME will sponsor a student design essay competition. Winners are invited to attend the 2020 ASME Design Technical Conference (IDETC) in St. Louis, Missouri and will receive reimbursement for expenses up to a maximum of $1,500. The essay envisions that you (the essay author) are a consultant working for a high tech, global manufacturing enterprise. That company wants to position itself to be a leading major high-tech global design and manufacturing enterprise in the year 2035. As a consultant, you want the company to succeed so you will need to:
- Define the characteristics of a successful high-tech global design and manufacturing company in the year 2035
- Identify the research challenges it will face. Identify the mode of operation of the company. Determine what partnerships it will need to form
- Identify what technology will be necessary to support its employees in being globally competitive

DFMLC-12 Special Session: 3rd Annual Design Tool Showcase
Description: The ASME DFMLC Committee and the Organizers of the Special Session on Design Tool Showcase invite the presentation of novel tools relevant to design research. The presented tools can be software programs (i.e. spreadsheets, plug-ins, information standards/protocols, databases, etc.), interactive applications (augmented reality, virtual reality, information visualization, design tools, etc.), and physical prototypes (i.e. method cards, role-playing games, checklists etc.). The Design Tool Showcase provides participants with a unique opportunity to demonstrate practice-oriented innovations in design research with industry and academic members of the ASME community. Submissions to the design tool showcase should include an abstract describing the tool, an image of the tool, and a paragraph detailing the proposed setup. Selected submissions will be presented in an open-exhibition format, where participants can display a poster describing the tool and setup interactive demonstrations.

2020 ASME Student Mechanism & Robot Design Competition
The ASME Student Mechanism and Robot Design Competition (SMRDC) is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their ability to design and build a mechanism or a robot.
The competition comprises two rounds: Round 1 (Qualifying Round): Participants submit a Letter of Intent and a written report on their entry. All entries are evaluated by a panel of judges chosen from academe and industry. The top five entries in each category qualify for the next round. Round 2 (Demo and Presentation): This round will be held at the 2020 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences in Louis, MO from August 16 – 19, 2020. Each team will be required to make: a). Oral presentation (4 minutes only) describing their entry; b). Interactive poster and prototype presentation (more details please see our website).

2020 ASME-CIE Graduate Research Poster Session: Call for Application
The ASME-CIE Graduate Research Poster session is an opportunity for graduate students in the preliminary phase of their research programs (within 1 year of starting an MS or within 2 years of starting a PhD) to present their current work to the CIE research community. This session provides the students a chance to obtain external feedback on their preliminary research that may not yet be ready for presentation at the conference in archival form.
The poster session is organized by ASME's Computers and Information in Engineering division (CIE) and will be held during the 2020 ASME IDETC-CIE Conference in St. Louis MO, during August 16-19, 2020.
