ASME New Department Heads Workshop and Posters Presentation

Organizer: Nader Jalili, Dean, Lyle School of Engineering, Southern Methodist University (SMU) and former ME Department Head at University of Alabama
This interactive workshop is designed to provide current and future department heads and chairs with information from experienced department heads on topics related to leading and managing departments. The following interactive breakout sessions will be offered to help achieve these goals.
9:00-9:15 am: Introduction and overview of the workshop
9:15-10:00 am: First Parallel Breakout Sessions
Parallel Breakout Sessions 1: Education Reform in ME Departments: These parallel breakout sessions will cover the following topics: i) New course delivery modes, ii) Modular and stackable course offerings and credentials, iii) 4-year design project vs. senior design project, iv) First-year experience for ME students, and Other related topics
10:00-10:15 am: Break and Posters Review and Observation
10:15-10:45 am: Report from breakout sessions, discussions and conclusions
10:45-11:30 am: Second Parallel Breakout Sessions
Parallel Breakout Sessions 2: Challenges and Opportunities in ME/AEM Departments
These parallel breakout sessions will cover the following challenges and opportunities exist in: i) New faculty hiring and recruitment; ii) Onboarding new faculty and career development process; iii) Dealing with budget cuts and limited resources, iv) Other challenges and opportunities (pls. name and share a few specific topics related to your own department)
