Matt Salac
Manager, NSSS Engineering
NuScale Power
Matt Salac is a front line manager in the NSSS Engineering department at NuScale Power. He started his nuclear career as an intern at Westinghouse in 2006 performing analyses for structural weld overlay projects. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with his both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in 2008, he developed skill sets in ASME Section III and Section XI analysis work. Leveraging his computer programming background from university, he became the developer and owner of several software tools used by Westinghouse's engineering services division. In 2018, he transitioned to being a customer solutions engineer, helping to develop the engineering services business related to plant life extensions. In 2020, during the COVID pandemic shutdown, Matt was presented an opportunity to join NuScale Power as an engineer responsible for vessel design and analysis. He was inspired by the mission of NuScale Power and the novel design of the NuScale Power Module (now called VOYGR). In 2022, he was promoted to be the manager of the department. His team is responsible for the design and analysis of the reactor pressure vessel, which combines the reactor vessel, steam generator, and pressurizer of a traditional PWR into a single component. Outside of work, Matt and his wife, Katlyn, are proud parents of three wonderful children ages 6, 5, and 2. Consequential to being a parent, his hobbies have been reduced from being a marathon runner, fitness enthusiast, and guitarist to being a casual runner and chauffer for kids activities, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
