Qing Chang

Dr. Qing (Cindy) Chang's research has focused on improving sustainability and efficiency of smart manufacturing systems. She specializes in dynamic manufacturing system modeling and analysis based on sensor data, adaptive control and machine learning based control to improve the performance of manufacturing processes and systems, and human-robot collaborations in manufacturing. Dr. Chang received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). She is an ASME fellow and has been recognized as one of 20 most influential professors in smart manufacturing by SME in 2020. Before joining the University of Virginia in 2019, she was an associated professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University. She worked in General Motors Research & Development Center from 1997 to 2009, where she won the highest award in GM, General Motors Boss Kettering Awards, for 3 times for her research works in improving production efficiency and quality. She has published 100+ refereed journal articles and conference papers and holds 3 United States patents. Dr. Chang has served on numerous international/domestic conference/symposium organizing committees and chairmanships of technical committees/sessions for IEEE, ASME, and SME etc. Dr. Chang obtained M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Wisconsin – Madison, PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.
