General Singapore Information

Climate: Singapore's climate is tropical, with relatively high temperatures, abundant rainfall, and high humidity throughout the year. The Southwest Monsoons begin from June and Singapore experiences less rainfall and thunderstorms. It is generally pleasant during this time with lots of sunshine. An average daily temperature is 30°C and the average overnight low temperature falls to 24°C.

Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Singapore. Most restaurants and hotels in Singapore add a 10% service charge to the bill so a tip is not expected.

Safety: Singapore is a very safe country to visit (even if you travel alone). In fact, in 2019, the city was ranked the second safest city in the world. The country has a stable political system and a low crime rate due to its very strict rules and regulations. Be aware of these rules before you go and make sure you stick to them to avoid any run-ins with the law.

Smoking: Smoking is prohibited in public spaces where members of the public gather and may be exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke.

Singapore visitors do not need to purchase a travel card to use MRT and buses to travel when exploring the Lion City.

All trains and buses accept contactless payments with a credit card or mobile wallet, which means you won't need to purchase any special transit cards, nor top them up.

Simply tap at the start of your journey and your fare will be calculated automatically and later billed to your credit card.

For Visa cardholders, this takes place once per day, with a single credit card charge combining all your fares each calendar day.

Mastercard users will instead notice a single transaction once every five days, or after $15 has been spent on transit fares, whichever is sooner.

Mass Rapid Transit System (MRT): The best way to get around Singapore is via its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) subway system. This underground network has lines that stretch across the entire city. MRT subway system is extensive, clean, efficient, inexpensive, and easy to understand. Fares are based on the distance you travel and can be calculated here.

Buses: The bus network is another efficient way to get around Singapore. Consult a TransLink Travel Guide to find out the relevant bus route, operating hours, frequency, and fares. Like travel on the MRT, most fares depend on distance travelled, and you can buy tickets for each individual journey or get a stored value card, allowing you to make multiple trips.

Taxi: Taxis are comfortable and especially handy if you want to go to places not accessible by the bus or MRT. Cabs here are metered, but there may be surcharges depending on when, where and which company's taxi you board.

To get a rough idea of the final fare, check with the driver on the surcharges and ask for a receipt at the end of the trip. You can also check out this website for a quick and easy comparison.

You can hail a taxi by the roadside at most places, or by queuing for one at a taxi stand, which you’ll find at most malls, hotels and attractions.

Alternatively, you may use one of the ride-hailing applications available in Singapore to book a ride from your preferred pick-up point to your desired destination. Some options available include Grab, Gojek, Ryde and TADA.

Singapore EXPO has a dedicated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, located next to Hall 6. Trains arrive every 5 minutes from Changi International Airport and Tanah Merah MRT station while it takes about 15 minutes from the city location.

We greatly encourage all delegates to use the MRT, as Singapore EXPO is only one quick stop away via the MRT!

The trip from Changi Airport to Singapore EXPO will take maximum of 14minutes (including average waiting and changing times if any) and the fares will be $1.30 SGD.

Singapore EXPO is situated at the crossroads of three major expressways and can be accessed by taxi within 5 minutes from the airport. Taxi fare from the airport is approximately $15 dollars and if you are going to the city, the fare would be approximately $20 dollars.

OMAE 2024 will be held at the Singapore EXPO in the MAX Atria section. Singapore EXPO is at the doorstep of the Changi Business Park (CPB) occupied by a leading business hub of technology firms, banking and logistics companies, hotels and green garden areas.

All session rooms for OMAE 2024 will be in close proximity, ensuring that all delegates can attend sessions of their interest.

MAX Atria can be accessed via train, buses and taxis.
