Best Student Hardware Competition

WHEN: Monday, September 14, 2021
WHERE: ASME 2021 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems
DEADLINE: July 9, 2021

The ASME Aerospace Division, Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Branch is organizing the Best Student Hardware Competition as part of the ASME 2021 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS). Entrants will be judged by a committee of smart materials and structures experts, and a list of finalists will be determined based upon the technical paper. Finalists are required to present their papers at a regular conference session and must participate in a special exhibit session. During the live special exhibit session, finalists will present a 1-slide quad chart explaining the nature of the project along with a recorded video demonstrating hardware operation. All finalists will be honored during the Pioneer Banquet. Certificates and monetary awards will be presented to the top selected finalists.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. A full-length paper must be officially submitted via the web according to conference guidelines and accepted.
  2. While other authors may be listed on the paper, the student must have contributed the majority of the effort presented and in the writing of the paper.
  3. E-mail your final paper as a PDF file to the contest chair, Prof. Amin Bibo, Clemson University by the deadline (07/09/2021), with "2021 SMASIS Student Hardware Competition" in the subject line. Please also attach the notification of paper acceptance as well as list the paper tracking number in the email. Each student can only enter one paper in this competition.
  4. The student author must commit to attending the conference and presenting his or her paper at the special session in addition to their regular assigned conference session.

Important Dates

For abstract and paper submission, all general deadlines posted in the ASME-SMASIS 2021 publication schedule apply.

Additional important dates related to the Best Student Paper Competition are:

July 9, 2021: Submission of a PDF file to contest chair via e-mail
August 15, 2021: Notification of selected finalists
September 14, 2021: Presentations made by finalists in SMASIS conference special exhibit
September 15, 2021: Finalists and Winner announced at the Pioneer Banquet

Evaluation Criteria

The submitted papers will need to explicitly demonstrate a connection to smart materials, adaptive structures, and integrated systems, and advance the state-of-the-art. Finalists will be judged solely on the paper, and will include criteria such as:

  • Relevance to smart materials, adaptive structures and integrated systems
  • Significance and impact of work
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Completeness and quality of work presented
  • Clarity of the writing and presentation

In addition to the criteria listed above, student hardware and the associated poster in the exhibit session will be evaluated based on the following factors.

  • Relevance performance characteristics of the system
  • Integration and concert operation of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering elements of the system
  • Reliability and robustness of operation

The overall best hardware paper will be selected based on quality and effectiveness of the oral poster presentation and hardware demonstration during the hardware exhibit session.
