Patrick Bain

Patrick Bain

Patrick Bain is the Manager of Hydrogen Projects for ATCO's Natural Gas division. With over 12 years’ experience, he has held progressively senior roles in engineering management, design, and project management for natural gas transmission pipelines. Patrick is currently responsible for leading a team of experts through the scoping, design and execution of key initiatives, including the Fort Saskatchewan Hydrogen Blending pilot for ATCO. Once commissioned, the endeavor will be the first of its kind in Alberta and the largest by blend volume in Canada.

 

 

Nigel Bankes

Nigel Bankes

Nigel Bankes is an emeritus professor of law at the University of Calgary where he taught from 1984 to 2021. Prior to his retirement he held the chair in resources law with the Faculty and taught a range of subjects including property law, oil and gas law, energy law and international environmental law. He has written extensively on the legal and regulatory aspects of carbon capture and advised governments and industry. He served as a member of the Steering Committee for the Province of Alberta's Regulatory Framework Assessment on CCS. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

 

 

Kurt Baraniecki

Kurt Baraniecki

Kurt Baraniecki has been with Enbridge for over 20 years and has held various leadership roles across North America in the areas of Pipeline Integrity, Engineering, Operations, Project Development, Project Management Office and Construction. In his current role of Director of Pipeline Integrity for Enbridge’s Gas Transmission business unit, Kurt is responsible for leading the planning and execution of the pipeline integrity threat management programs including geohazard management, internal and external corrosion, cracking and deformation programs. Kurt has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta and an MBA in Finance from the Schulich School of Business at York University. Kurt is a family man, married to his wife for 20 years, he has two 16-year-old twin children and a golden lab named Marley. If Kurt is not busy keeping the pipelines safe, you’ll often find him on a golf course somewhere around the world with his family.

 

Erin Bobicki

Erin Bobicki

Dr. Erin R. Bobicki is an Associate Professor of mineral processing in the department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, and Chief Technology Officer of Aurora Hydrogen, a start-up developing technology for distributed, emission-free hydrogen production. She has worked as a researcher and plant metallurgist for Vale, as a Process Technology Development Engineer for Intel Corporation, and most recently was an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include industrial applications of microwave technology, comminution, bioreagent development, the rheology of complex mineral slurries, value recovery from waste materials, and the integration of CCUS into mineral processing flowsheets. Dr. Bobicki coaches minor hockey and lacrosse, and enjoys spending time at the cabin with her husband, five children and two Iceland Sheepdogs.

 

Genevieve Carr

Genevieve Carr

Genevieve Carr is Professional Leader, Environment, with the Canada Energy Regulator, where she oversees the work of environment and socio-economic specialists across the organization, ensuring that the CER is delivering technical excellence in its oversight of the facilities it regulates. Genevieve has worked with the departments of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada, often at the interface of the environment, the economy and Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples. In recent years, she has worked on files such as the development of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, on Canada's environmental and regulatory reviews (that became Bill C-69), and on oil and gas matters in Canada's North. Genevieve is a biologist with degrees from McGill University (BSc), the University of Alberta (MSc), and the University of Ottawa (PhD); she joined the federal public service in 2005.

 

Adam Chalkley

Adam Chalkley

Adam Chalkley joined Enbridge in January 2020 and is the Director of Low Carbon Development for Enbridge's liquids pipelines business unit. He is responsible for the development of low carbon business opportunities across the carbon dioxide and hydrogen value chains, spanning Enbridge’s liquids pipeline footprint, from Alberta to the US Gulf Coast, including the recently announced Open Access Wabamun Carbon Hub. To be located west of Edmonton, the Wabamun Carbon Hub has the potential to double Canada’s captured and permanently stored carbon dioxide by as early as 2027. The Wabamun Hub represents a unique collaboration among a broad range of industries, including downstream oil and gas, power generation, and cement manufacturing, as well as local Indigenous groups who will co-own and co-develop the transportation and sequestration infrastructure. Prior to joining Enbridge, Adam was the founder and owner of a crane and rigging company servicing Western Canada. He also worked in various strategic and operational roles at Flint Energy Services, including President of Flint's specialized transportation division – ENTREC Transportation Services, and Vice President of Strategy and Development of Flint’s maintenance services division – FT Services. Adam began his career as a lawyer with Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP in Calgary, Alberta. Adam holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Master of Business Administration degree (specialization in Natural Resources and Energy) and a Bachelor of Laws degree all from the University of Alberta.

 

Linda Daugherty

Linda Daugherty

Linda Daugherty serves as the Deputy Associate Administrator (DAA) for Pipeline Safety – Field Operations. She has worked with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) for over 29 years. Ms. Daugherty leads PHMSA’s pipeline Field Operations, including inspection and enforcement staff located across the country in five Region Offices and three District Offices. She also leads the Accident Investigation Division and the Washington based Operations Standards Division. She previously served as DAA for Policy and Programs in Washington, leading the efforts of the Enforcement, Engineering, Regulatory, Training and Qualifications, State Program and Program Development Divisions. Ms. Daugherty also has served as Region Director for the Southern and Central Regions. Ms. Daugherty, a chemical engineer by training joined PHMSA in 1991 as an inspector/investigator.

 

Danielle Demers

Danielle Demers is a professional engineer and certified lead auditor who is passionate about pipeline safety. She has served the pipeline industry for over 20 years in regulatory, operating and consulting environments. Drawing on this experience, Danielle currently works as a consultant, partnering with her clients to develop, implement, and continually improve their management systems and programs.

 

 

 

Vincent Holohan

Vincent Holohan

Vincent Holohan serves as a Senior Engineer within the Engineering and Research Division of the Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) at the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), which he joined in 2008. PHMSA OPS is responsible for administering the DOT’s national regulatory program to assure the safe transportation of natural gas, petroleum, and other hazardous materials by pipeline. Among his numerous roles, Vincent acts as the PHMSA prime technical contact for both hydrogen and carbon dioxide pipelines. Prior to joining PHMSA, Vincent worked in the natural gas industry as a Materials Engineer. And before that, Vincent was a civilian Materials Engineer with the US Navy at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, working in their Regional Materials Test Laboratory, focusing on metallurgical testing and failure analysis. Vincent received his Bachelors of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2000 and his Masters of Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2007. Vincent was raised in southern New York State and currently lives in Falls Church, VA.

 

Shahani Kariyawasam

Shahani Kariyawasam

Shahani Kariyawasam has led innovative engineering projects on all continents (except Antarctica) collaborating with international operators, vendors, regulators, standards committees, and industry organizations. She graduated from University of Alberta with a Ph.D. focused on risk and reliability. In the past 30 years she worked with TC Energy, GE Oil & Gas, C-FER Technologies, Universities etc. She has published over 60 papers and is the inventor of patents. Presently with TC Energy, she is the Director of Innovation and Decision Optimization. She is the Vice-chair of the Pipeline Research Council International executive board and represents TCE at many industry organizations.

 

 

Sam McDermott

Sam McDermott

Sam McDermott is a licensed professional engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada with over 27 years of engineering project management mechanical design, and management experience in both the Manufacturing and Energy sectors.

He holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the former Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) as well as a Master of Advanced Design and Manufacturing post graduate degree from the University of Toronto.

He has worked as a mechanical designer and project manager to develop highly specialized equipment for various industries, a project manager in the automotive industry and a designer and project manager of mechanical and fluids systems in the water industry.

Sam then went on to work in the energy sector with Enbridge Gas Inc., where he has held leadership roles in engineering, project management, design, contract management, operational, and customer service roles managing Enbridge's large volume customers.

Sam serves on the Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association's board, and is currently the Technical Manager Renewable Hydrogen for Enbridge Gas Inc's Renewable Hydrogen program in their Business Development team.

 

David Murk

David Murk

Captain David Murk, US Coast Guard (ret.), is the Director of Pipelines at the American Petroleum Institute (API) and is responsible for the oversight of infrastructure policy and technical issues to support and advocate for the safe and reliable transportation of petroleum liquid, natural gas and carbon dioxide by pipeline. Prior to joining API in 2016, Murk served twenty-six years in the public sector including twenty-four years with US Coast Guard and two years at US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). In his last three years in the Coast Guard, Murk served as the Senior Maritime Advisor to the Secretary of Transportation. At USDOT, Murk served as the Director of Field Operations in the Office of Pipeline Safety, where he helped lead over 140 pipeline inspectors in the oversight of federal safety regulations for natural gas and petroleum liquid pipelines and liquefied natural gas facilities. Murk began his career at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut earning a BS in Applied Science and has a Master's Degree in Business Administration. David, his wife Pam and boys reside in Maryland with their five dogs.

 

Tran Mah-Paulson

Tran Mah-Paulson

Tran Mah-Paulson, Senior Specialist, Quality Services with Pembina Pipeline Corporation, is a P Eng. with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta and an MBA from Queens University. Tran is a welding and materials specialist with extensive experience working on the development of pipeline maintenance and repair programs for pipeline operators and service companies located in Canada, United States, Europe, and India. His expertise and experience are related to pipeline design, pipeline materials, quality management systems, fabrication shop development and welding, including hot taps and isolations. Tran is the vice-chair of PRCI Design, Materials and Construction and is a member of the CSA Z662 Design and Materials TSC’s. Tran is also a YPI Fellow.

 

 

Scott Rennie

Scott Rennie

Scott Rennie is the President & CEO of Vault 44.01 and has over 20 years of engineering and leadership experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and oil and gas. Scott has built and led carbon sequestration organizations within Schlumberger (SLB) and ConocoPhillips (COP) and managed the development of 1+ MMT/ yr. CO2 storage projects in Texas (Sweeny Refinery), Kentucky (COP/Peabody partnership), Alberta (TransAlta Pioneer), and Saskatchewan (Aquistore). At SLB, Scott also held responsibility for leadership of the Schlumberger Carbon Services North America technical team. Prior to co-founding Vault, Scott held the position of Senior Vice President of Development with responsibility for subsurface engineering, planning and budgeting at a private oil & gas company that grew from zero to over 30,000 boe/ d of production and deployed over $1 billion of capital during his tenure. In that role, he also led development of a 400 MW combined cycle gas power plant project and served as President of the subsidiary developing the project. Scott holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University and is a registered professional engineer in Alaska and Alberta.

 

Jeff Whitworth

Jeff Whitworth

Jeff Whitworth leads the Emerging Fuels Program for Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI). In this role, Jeff focuses on delivering solutions to meet the demands of pipeline transportation during the transition to a renewable energy society while improving process safety performance and operational practices across the pipeline industry. Prior to joining PRCI in 2021 in a consulting role, Jeff enjoyed a 38-year career in the upstream and midstream energy industry. He spent the last 20 years at Shell Pipeline Company where he led the reliability and integrity program and was responsible for engineering and operations standards that delivered sustainable and safe performance. His educational background includes a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and a Master of Business Administration, both earned from The University of Texas at Austin.
