Dr. George Mesina is the Code Architect and Team Leader for RELAP5-3D (the Reactor Excursion and Leak Analysis Program). He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988 and has worked at the Idaho National Laboratory ever since as a Math/Computer Expert, Code Developer, Project Manager, and as Acting Manager for TH & CFD for one year. In 26 years as code architect, he has mentored half a dozen team members, converted the programming language, kept the code abreast of advances in the computer and nuclear industries, added major features, fixed bugs, and advised clients. In 1 year as manager, he made the first RELAP5-3D code release in 5 years, held the first International User Group Meeting in 4, completed numerous contracts, modernized the website, and rebuilt the RELAP5 Team from 3 experts to 15. Now he is training them.
