The ICE Forward conference is intended to cultivate a collegial environment in which participants can discuss and exchange information related to the science and engineering of internal combustion engines. This event provides a forum for experts from industry, academia, and governmental agencies from all over the world to share the latest technological developments.

Submit Abstract

This track includes technical papers and presentations focused on off-road engines and engine systems. Contributions addressing industry relevant topics in rail, marine, small off-road vehicles, agriculture, compressor stations, power generation and mining, among others are welcomed. Topics of interest include:

  1. Implementation of advanced ignition systems, novel combustion systems and diagnostics, emissions control, and other relevant technologies as applied to off-road engines.
  2. Prototype testing results and real-world demonstrations of off-road engine systems.


This track includes technical papers and presentations with emphasis on fuel utilization and fuel impacts on engines as well as carbon management of engine systems. Topics of interest include:

  1. Sustainable fuel utilization in engines, including e-fuels, inorganic fuels, biofuels, and conventional petroleum fuels used in novel configurations.
  2. Carbon management of engine systems including carbon capture and storage, low carbon fuels, and onboard conversion of exhaust carbon dioxide to other products.


This track includes technical papers and presentations focused on advanced combustion research for engines at all scales and for all applications. Papers addressing fundamental concepts and experiments in the following areas are welcome:

  1. Fundamental aspects of IC engines, including engine thermodynamics, extreme compression, experimental engine fluid dynamics, etc.
  2. Novel/advanced combustion regimes including HCCI, LTC, RCCI/dual fuel, GCI, etc.
  3. Combustion diagnostics including in-cylinder laser-based and optical diagnostics and pressure-based methods


This track includes technical papers and presentations in the areas of internal combustion engines used in advanced powertrain configurations, electrification/hybridization strategies, and emissions control strategies. Topics of interest include:

  1. Modeling and diagnostics for emissions and control systems including combustion modeling, sub-system modeling, hardware in the loop (HiL) models, sensor signal processing, and onboard modeling for diagnostics
  2. Innovative testing equipment and methods including experimental emissions measurement, catalyst formulations, HiL applications, rapid control prototyping, and design of novel test rigs
  3. Novel control strategies and calibration methods including advanced control and transient calibration methodologies
  4. New engine sensing methodologies for emissions control, diagnostics and research applications including new sensors, catalyst aging, new applications of existing sensors, and sensors for production engines
  5. Engine sub-systems including new actuators and/or sensors used as part of auxiliary systems
  6. Powertrain electrification including engines operating within hybrid powertrains, engine design, development, and control for hybrid applications


This track includes technical papers and presentations focused on engine fuel injection and sprays with the goal of expanding knowledge of the fuel spray evolution, mixing and combustion behavior. Topics of interest include fundamental simulation and experimental research in the areas of:

  1. Reacting and non-reacting fuel sprays
  2. Fundamental liquid breakup and atomization
  3. Spray diagnostics development
  4. Droplet phenomena and combustion
  5. New or developing fuel injection technology


This track invites technical papers and presentations focused on advancing numerical modeling and simulation of internal combustion engines across various dimensions. Topics of interest include new developments and novel concepts related to:

  1. Two-phase and Reacting Flow Modeling
  2. Turbulence Modeling
  3. Chemical Kinetics
  4. Machine Learning
  5. System-level Modeling Related to Engines


This track includes technical papers and presentations focused on engine design, mechanical development and thermal management of engines and subsystems. Topics of interest include:

  1. Base engine mechanical systems including valvetrain, power cylinder, fuel system and turbomachinery
  2. Thermal management of engine cooling and lubrication systems
